Netflix released a trailer and a visual of the Thermae Romae Novae Anime. The trailer has English subtitles and is around 130 seconds long. It opens with a shot of Lucius standing in a bathhouse. His voiceover says, “What is this place?” The scene moves on to an important person asking Lucius to design a bathhouse. After a shot of a bath area, viewers see Lucius in despair because he has no ideas. Then something summons him into the water and sends him to a bathhouse in modern Japan. After this, viewers see Lucius getting shocked at the modern inventions, from a table fan to the mechanics of the bath.

The frame then moves on to him using these ideas in Ancient Rome. Lucius then interacts with various Japanese people and tries to understand many other things like slippers, toilets, and drinking milk after a bath. A voiceover announces that this original net animation will have entirely new episodes of the heart-warming time-traveling bath comedy. The video ends with the ending card showing the release date of the anime series.

What Is The Anime About?

Thermae Romae is a story that is technically happening in Ancient Rome. Lucius Modestus is the main character. He is a Roman architect. One day an Emperor commissions him to build a bathhouse, but he realizes he has no new ideas. Just as he is about to become depressed, some strange force sucks him and sends him to a bathhouse in modern-day Japan. He feels shocked and amazed by the modern inventions in Japan. However, he notes down ideas and brings them back to his time. He designs his own spa, Roma Thermae, and tries to put these new ideas to use there. The series originally had a story in the form of episodes with new problems in every chapter.

It was announced in the Netflix trailer that the Thermae Romae Novae Anime would be entirely original content with new episodes. So fans are expecting the major premise to be the same with the main character getting transported to modern-day Japan. There is not a big difference between Natsumi’s backstory in the light novel and the anime. She is Keisuke’s nephew, who appears to be the older sister type to Hodoka and teases him every chance she gets. However, the light novel explains a bit more about her background. She was unable to get along with her father, Keisuke’s older brother, so she decided to come and live with her uncle. This is also because her father is overachieving and has always outshone every family member. She is also somewhat of a runaway kid.

Ayane Hanazawa

Ayane was Nagi Amano’s ex-girlfriend. She helped him out despite ending the relationship with him. Although her role in the movie and the novel is small, there is one extra detail about her in the novel that is interesting. The novel hints that her real name is not Ayane Hanazawa, which is a combination of the names of two voice actresses. Her real name is Ayane Sakura.
